Tips of Clothing to Wear on Camera

When appearing on camera in Utah or across the globe for a video interview, presentation, or any other purpose, it's important to choose attire that looks good and conveys your message and self. Here are some tips on what to wear:

General Guidelines:

  1. Solid Colors:

    • Solid colors are generally a safer choice than patterns, which can be distracting or cause visual artifacts on camera. It is best to run colors and patterns by the video team beforehand especially if a green or blue screen is being used.

  2. Avoid Bright Colors and White:

    • Bright colors like neon shades can be too flashy, and white can cause issues with lighting and exposure. Off-whites and softer tones are better alternatives.

  3. Stay Away from Logos and Sayings:

    • Unless it is a company shirt, logos and sayings should be avoided. They can be distracting and sometimes cause legal issues.

  4. Fit and Comfort:

    • Wear clothes that fit well and are comfortable. You don't want to be adjusting your clothing during the recording.

Specific Tips:

  1. Dress Shirt and Blazer:

    • A well-fitted dress shirt paired with a blazer is a classic, professional look. Avoid overly busy patterns on shirts. A white shirt under a blazer is okay.

  2. Blouse and Blazer:

    • A blouse paired with a blazer is a versatile and professional choice.

  3. Neckties:

    • If wearing a tie, choose one with a simple, subtle pattern or a solid color that complements your shirt and blazer.

  4. Avoid Shiny Fabrics:

    • Shiny fabrics can reflect light and be distracting. Matte finishes are preferable.

  5. Dress or Skirt:

    • Professional dresses or skirts and blouses can also work well. Ensure the length and fit are appropriate for the subject matter and comfortable. Keep in mind a mic and its pack might need to be attached to your clothing. So sturdy fabric is recommended.

  6. Casual Clothing:

    • Not every video requires a professional look. If you are wearing a t-shirt for instance and you will be getting mic’d, a thicker material is preferred to not only clip the mic onto said shirt but to also hide the cable underneath.

  7. Minimal Jewelry:

    • Keep jewelry minimal and avoid pieces that jingle or can be distracting. Simple earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are best.

  8. Shoes:

    • Shoes should go with the clothing you are wearing and activity but also be comfortable. You might be asked to stand for long periods of time on hard surfaces, so comfort will make a huge difference. If your video requires you to walk and talk a shoe with minimal noise would be beneficial.

Additional Tips:

  1. Avoid Busy Patterns:

    • Avoid tight stripes, checks, or intricate patterns, as these can create visual noise and be distracting on camera.

  2. Hair and Makeup:

    • Ensure your hair is neatly styled and consider using makeup to avoid shine on your face. Matte makeup helps reduce glare from lights.

  3. Background Consideration:

    • Consider your background and choose clothing that contrasts well with it. Avoid colors that blend into your background.

  4. Test Your Look:

    • Do a test run to see how your outfit looks on camera. This also gives you a chance to adjust for lighting and camera angles.

  5. Grooming:

    • Ensure you are well-groomed. Pay attention to hair, facial hair, and overall cleanliness.

By following these tips, you'll ensure that you look your best on camera, presenting a polished and professional image.
